Service Description

Local sewist and jewellery maker, Cath Bull, will be joining us for this special one-off class to create beautiful Cathedral Windows from your favourite scrap fabrics. A lovely sewing technique dating back to the 1930's, this colourful quilting technique can be used in lots of different projects, and it a wonderful way of using up your favourite fabric scraps. Inspired by historic church and Cathedral windows, women in the American Depression used scraps of fabric to create wonderful pieces of work. A cathedral window quilt is not the same as a traditional quilt, but earns its title from not including the backing or batting, and consists basically of the patchwork top with edging. The window panes are made from colourful "tatters", such as patterned fabrics or sumptuous crushed velvet scraps, to imitate the colourful stained glass of the windows, and the "frames" are often made from heavier cottons, calicos or marocain. We will supply everything you need to create your Cathedral Windows, but if you do have any favourite fabrics you would like to incorporate into your designs, please do bring them along. Cath currently has a gorgeous range of colourful raw silks and crushed velvets to use, and we will of course be opening our fabric stores for you to have a rummage! The workshop will be held on Saturday 23rd March, from 10am til 2.30pm and costs £35 for the day. All the materials and equipment required to make your Cathedral Windows will be supplied, however, if you have a sewing kit with your favourite scissors, needles etc, and you have some fabrics you'd like to include in your designs, please bring that along. We will also keep you refreshed with tea, coffee and biscuits but please bring a packed lunch. We do have a microwave and a toaster, or alternatively Olde Penny's Tea Rooms will be open for sandwiches etc. If you have any questions, please email us at info@upcyclekernow.org, and to book your place, please follow the links We look forward to getting creative with you!
